This course is provided under the sponsorship of the Department of Children and Families Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit. It is open to all who are interested in learning more about the Statute and Florida Administrative Code governing the Baker Act.
This course is recommended for all professionals dealing with clients experiencing Mental Illness and possibly needing Baker Act Services. Administrators, managers, and staff of ALF facilities with the LMH specialty license are eligible to enroll. * There is no charge for the standard Certificate of Completion. For those seeking CE Broker approval, there is a $5.00 processing fee for that version of the Certificate of Completion. That fee will be increased to $15.00 per course effective July 1, 2016. A passing score of 80% or higher on the course exam is required for either certificate option. Coursework is fully online, formatted with PowerPoints, graphics and voice overlay plus videos. Topics include an overview of the history of the Baker Act and its legislative intent; Express & Informed Consent; Criteria and Appropriate use of Voluntary Admissions and Involuntary Admissions

This course is designed as a review of the Baker Act with emphasis on relevant statutes in regards to law enforcement. This course is focused on the Federal EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and the Active Labor Act) and its relationship to the state's Baker Act as applied to emergency conditions regarding psychiatric treatment, stabilization, and transfer in hospital settings. This course is designed as a review of the Baker Act with emphasis on relevant statutes affecting residents of long term care facilities. These include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult family care homes,and adult day care facilities. The focus of the course is on the special needs of the frail and elderly with regard to the Baker Act and Involuntary Examination, placement, and transportation to Receiving facilities. Included in this course are "Best Practice Tools for Behavior Management" and issues of psychotropic medication usage in nursing homes. This course is open to all who are interested in learning more about the Baker Act and these Long Term Care residents. This course is provided under the sponsorship of the Department of Children and Families Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about Guardian Advocate roles and responsibilities for an incompetent individual while that person is under involuntary placement at a Mental Health Facility. This certificate is required for such a Guardian Advocate in this setting (394 F.S.). It meets the professional standards established by the statewide Public Guardian Office.
This course is recommended for all professionals dealing with clients experiencing Mental Illness and possibly needing Baker Act services. It is particularly relevant for Public or Professional Guardians (394 F.S.) and recommended for examining committee members.
